GRAND PALACE

Built in 1782, the Grand Palace was the official residence of the Thai kings in early Rattanakosin era, the Royal court and the administrative seat of government. Today, it remains the spiritual heart of Thailand. Its beautiful architecture with intricate detail boasts creativity and craftsmanship of the Thai people. Note that a dress code is strictly enforced at the Grand Palace (see detail). And you cannot enter most of the buildings.

  • The Temple of Emerald Buddha; two giant figures at the entrance, and the statue of a meditating Buddha made out of jade and dressed in gold robes
  • Phra Mondop; a building made out of tiny green and gold glass mosaics, and a gilt spire
  • Prasat Phra Debidorn (the Royal Pantheon); two golden pagodas and the row of colorful giants who guard the building
  • The replica of the Khmer-style Angkor Wat
  • The Great Chakri Palace; Italian Renaissance style building with beautiful Siamese stepped roofs and mondhop
  • Dusit Maha Prasat (King Rama I's Audience Chamber)
  • Aphorn Phimok Prasat (King Rama I's robing chamber); the delicate golden wooden pavilion

Sitting on Chao Phraya River, the mall is home to upscale Thai restaurants and chic cafes.

A UNESCO's World Heritage site, Wat Pho contains the most number of pagoda in the world. Known as the first university of the Thailand, this is where knowledge of traditional Thai massage was formed.

WAT ARUN TEMPLE

Featuring the massive 79 meter high central Khmer-style pagoda covered with decorative mosaic designs made from fragments of porcelain and glass, Wat Arun is the most magnificent historical landmark on Chao Phraya river

WAT SAKET TEMPLE (THE GOLDEN MOUNTAIN)

The temple features a golden pagoda seated at the top of 80-meter-tall manmade hill. Climbing the 344 stair flight to the pagoda, you are rewarded with 360 degree views over Bangkok's Old City. There are plenty of places to stop for a break and the walkway is lined with interesting statues. At the bottom of the hill is an old cemetery from the times when the temple was used as a burial ground for victims of the plague.
